The Power of the media:
I'm sharing this with you because the story surrounding this image is inspiring. The flying athlete is Caleb Kowalko, who went on to become the Provincial HS senior PV champ. He has just passed the baton to Kyle Wisnoski (EP Scarlett/Caltaf) in the 4x100m. Two weeks after the event (mid-June), I sent this image to SI on a hunch... and received a quick reply from their Senior Photo editor, that it was a good image. The following week, it was published... quite a surprise for the athletes and photog! The day it was published, a Calgary Herald sports writer called me, and said they had seen this (they received the SI web version), and they wanted to publish a story about it. Two days later, the half page story appeared on the front page of Herald Sports. Subsequently, the story was discussed on CNN, FAN960 sports radio, and, it also appeared in a religious newspaper.
Caleb's father is in the ministry and Caleb was planning to attend a Calgary college for religious studies and music. However, the SI image and story was seen by the Head T F coach at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon. Based on the commitment and heart that Caleb displayed, they increased a previous scholarship offer, so Caleb is pursuing his studies and Multi-events in Track @ WPC.
